Our New Buffet...Before and After!

Hey ya'll, Hope someone might be reading this! I'm sure I have lost every reader I had! A year+ is a long time to go with out writing a single blog post! I have missed it so much...but life has been really crazy! As you may know my dad passed in May of 2014 and at that time I had no plan of stopping the blog, but was just taking some time to try and get back to doing some of the projects I wanted to possibly blog about...when more of life's stumbling blocks got in the way.

My daughter's husband left the marriage...2 short weeks after their 3rd child was born.  This came as a complete shock for all of us...and a very rough year for my daughter. She and her 3 children moved in with us. This is a big change for my husband and I...as we have been empty nesters since 2006! While this has been a very rough year for our daughter...we are so very proud of her! She had been a stay at home mom for the last 3 years of her marriage, however she has a psychology degree, and has now gone back to school to get her masters. The plan is for her to stay here while she does that, and we can help her with the kids. She is doing VERY well after all she has been through!!
That being said... I have managed to accomplish a little here and there.  So I thought I would get back to this ole blog, and give it another go round. It is something I really do enjoy!! I miss you!

If you were following me before, you might remember this cabinet...I came upon at a yard sale while visiting my son in Arkansas a couple of years ago...yes...a couple of years ago for a mere $35.00! You can read about it HERE  I did manage to get it done this last year and thought I would show you the before and after! I am so happy with the way that it turned out!
Again here is the before pic...and yes that is a vice attached to the top...the piece was being used in a Garage!

...and here it is today...

My husband has admitted to me, that he was wrong..and that this piece was worth bringing home from Arkansas! The entire piece is solid oak...except for the 2 door panels where I have replaced the metal pieces that were in there when I found it, with wood. He did an amazing job, fixing the top piece...sanding it down to the bare wood, and doing some other repair work...filling the holes that were left from the big bolts used to secure the vice, etc.  I then stained it with this stain:

The base paint is Valspar, and the color is Stoney Point. I distressed it just a little bit...and then again used the same stain to antique it. I used contact paper on the inside shelves and drawers...and replaced the handles on the drawers...and painted the 2 original on the doors to match. The indside I left in it's original condition, I love how you can really see the age on the inside walls. The shelves I covered with contact paper in the pretty gray and white chevron pattern.

Last but not least a picture to show you...as it stands here today in my kitchen.

If you have an interest in the shelves...I plan on doing a post in a few days about them...with close up pictures...so you can see how old they look, and how I achieved the look with brand new wood. Hope you come back and visit again. I am so happy to be back at blogging!

God Bless

Another "out of state" find!

Well, looks like I took a bit of a blogging break...again!  I certainly didn't know I was going to take a blogging break...and I didn't tell anyone I was going to take a blogging break...it wasn't my intention to take a blogging break...but guess what??
It seems like I took a blogging break!

This summer has completely gone by in a blur!
I have spent a lot of my time in Michigan! As I have said before...neither of my parents are doing well. I have been trying to help out with their care...and spending just as much time as I can with them...because quite frankly I don't know how much more time we'll have.

There has been practically no time for projects or decorating...or yard sales!

Right now, my husband and I are visiting my son in Arkansas. While they are away fishing...this morning...and I have some quiet time to myself I wanted to share my find with you.

We did manage to hit a couple of yard sales yesterday. The guys were trying to appease me because they were leaving me alone this morning to go fishing! I gave them a hard time...and it worked...but in truth, I am enjoying my quiet time this morning...with my laptop! Catching up with all of the bloggers out there and pinterest! "Now how could you guys leave me all alone like this...shame on you!"
She says with a big smile on her face, and a large mug of coffee!

Anyway...back to my story...as we were heading out yesterday morning...my husband said...

"now don't look for any furniture!
no buffets!
no chairs!
no china cabinets!
or anything else that is big!
we won't be able to get them home!!"

(we have our explorer and not our pick up)
My reply (it's always the same) "Where there's a will...there's a way!" After all if you read this post about the 2 chairs I brought home from Michigan you know that it's true!

Into the first garage we go...and this is what I see...

Can you say awesome!
35.00 bucks
and it now sits in my sons garage.
He has a truck...and is coming home Thanksgiving...and graciously said he would love to bring it home for me and didn't say no when I volunteered him to bring it home for me!

The pictures are horrible...it's to close to the wall...and to dark to get a good pic...but I still couldn't wait to show you...cause I am so excited to work on this!

It really needs to be cleaned up...
and needs a couple of fix ups...

After all it has been used in a garage as a work bench...and has had this vice bolted to the top...for years...and has had oil cans and other such stuff, stored on the shelves...but we're gonna take care of the holes (we being my hubby)...and I have a palm sander and some primer...so I am sure seeing the potential in this!

It is almost 74" long!
I have a few ideas kicking around, on where I might use it...and how I might refinish it. With very little work I think I could achieve a finish similar to this Pottery Barn trunk...

or how about this buffet from Restoration Hardware...

Or maybe just a fresh coat of paint!
It is solid wood...but I don't know what kind. I asked Bob...and his response was
 "firewood"

Oh ye of little faith!
You will see...

In the meantime...please send my your ideas...how do you see it finished in your mind?

Until next time...
sooner than later I hope...

Serving Up Instant Gratification...

I love instant gratification!

It's usually not a good thing

However today, I'm just popping in to show you a quick little project...that was almost instantly gratifying!

Last summer while hitting the yard sales I picked up 2 very similar trays.
This one is the smaller of the 2.

I thought they were interesting...and you can never have to many trays...
at least I can't anyway...I just like trays!

and for 5 bucks for the pair, would you pass em up?

They have almost a rusty look to them...which under the right circumstance I would like...but in my house, I'm fighting the brown on top of brown thing...or in this case the brown on top of black thing...and I have come to find out how much I love contrast.

So I grabbed this...

and quickly (I mean I didn't even cover every inch!)
put a coat of paint on.

Next I took these...

and mixed them together to get a bit of a lighter shade than the Caribbean color

about this color to be exact...

Once the original stone gray paint was dry

I dry brushed this color over it

Dry brushing...just in case you are wondering...is just as it sounds...take your dry brush...dip it in paint...and then wipe most all of it off on a rag or paper towel...and then brush over the item until you get the desired look.

In the case of this tray...the raised detail...made it very easy to get the effect I was looking for...

and here is the final piece...I just wanted to add a small amount of color...and it turned out just perfect!

Hope you like it!

It took about 10 minutes...

you can beat that for instant gratification!

Until next time...

God Bless!

Sharon
